Pilgrim Prayer Challenge – Week Four

5 Weekly Encouragements for Praying Pilgrims!

4. Prayer: Counting Blessings

“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18

Remember the classic Christmas movie “White Christmas?” A well-known scene includes Bing Crosby’s character (Bob) singing to Rosemary Clooney’s character (Betty), as she’s having trouble sleeping. The lyrics read:

When I’m worried and I can’t sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep counting my blessings

This is a beautiful song, and a wonderful sentiment. But for today, try challenging yourself to thank God for things that cannot be counted or accounted for in the earthly realm we live in. Think beyond the temporal; focus on the spiritual. Thank God for His eternal promises. Thank Him for His unchanging character. Thank Him for His promise of eternal everlasting life. Thank Him for the gift of the Holy Spirit. These are the things that never change due to circumstances and are available for all who believe.

**Helpful Hint: Try writing down your prayers. Keep a prayer journal. It’s always encouraging to look back and see how God faithfully carries His people through each season of life.
